Missed a few days here…

…some because I was just swamped with life, and then some because… I couldn’t think of anything worth sharing.

Now I’m back to try again.

Today was gorgeous. Sunny, around 80F, a soft breeze.  Birds singing, squirrels courting, azaleas, camellias, and spring flowers in mad profusion.  Children calling and laughing.  Remy, my Staffordshire, went out early and just didn’t come in.  Found her stretched out in the backyard, sunbathing.  Life is good.

On the writing front, things are … bumpy.  I am thrilled I completed the edits on Khyr’s story.  It is tighter, cleaner.  Not perfect…they never are…but I am proud of it.

The harder part is ahead.  What next?  I have a story I love.  Characters I adore and want to send out to meet the world.  So far the suggestions from those I know and care about who are part of the publishing industry (authors, editors, etc) are very very disheartening.  I am not usually one to be thin-skinned at all.  I accept critiques with delight in what I can learn and possibly improve.  I am open to advice and criticism because I want so very much to be the best possible writer I can be…

But this time…it is like ripping my soul out.

A friend whose clarity and wisdom I much appreciate suggested it is not just ‘this’ … but that it is another layer of pain and stress on top of all the monumental stress and fear we are already coping with in our day to day lives.  Another layer of hopelessness.

I want to tell you….don’t give up.  Don’t give in. We are strong enough to overcome the fear and the sorrows.  Strong enough to keep trying, to hold onto the precious things…like flowers in the morning sun, and our children’s laughter… and remember that the fight is worth it.  The human race is worth it.  Our world is worth it.

And, hopefully, in the end…maybe even just this small writer’s dream will be worth holding onto … until it is time for it to bloom as well.

Something Sunday

It was a lovely day today…a bit too cool for my liking, but positively balmy compared to so many places.  The week looks to be warming wonderfully to right around 80….then plunging precipitously on Thursday…just in time for my Little A’s birthday.

No worries, it will move indoors for Thursday and hopefully be warm again for his party on the weekend.

It is, of course, SuperBowl Sunday.  We used to watch it… okay, David watched it, sometimes some of the children watched with him, mostly I avoided all of it by staying in the kitchen making a mountain of snacks for hubby and the kids and then a special dinner and more snacks.  My only foray into the living room was to watch the Budweiser commercial.

This year… well, we don’t get tv any more, and even if we did none of us have any desire to watch the Patriots, who are beyond boring.  Poor David.  All the football fandom died with him.  However, there will be a couple of special after-supper snacks…just for fun.  And… watching the Budweiser commercial on the computer.  😀

Meanwhile…back on the ranch, or in this case at the old homestead…life goes on. I did weird and unusual things to the ‘stroganoff’ for supper…curious to see if they eat it based purely on my calling it by that name, lol.  Hey, ya work with what you’ve got 😉

(postscript… picky 7 yr old and suspicious 16 yr old just came through asking for seconds 😀 SCORE!)

The edits for Khyr will be completed tonight.

consider...:  Well…okay, my edits.  Next up…get a couple of beta read-throughs. Fix whatever they find….and in the meanwhile, work on my current wip, which is a fun mash up of eco-punk, fantasy, and who knows what else?  😀

Summertime sunshine

Another long fun filled day at work.  Lots of work outdoors, as usual.  Cleaning up, cleaning out.  Putting new plants in.  Mowed, edged, weeded.  All in the blazing high 90s, heat index in the 100s South Carolina sunshine.  And it was good.

In between, since poor Merrill is down with the ick and the meds are making him nauseous, I ran to the store and got club crackers and Coke for the upset tummy, and tuna and catfood for the grumpy cat.

DeeDee wrote me a lovely letter of recommendation which I shall send off to the school system tonight. My ‘plan’  (you know what they say about the best laid plans….)  is to get a part-time or floater position job, if possible, with the County schools.  That would provide the income cushion I am sorely needing and keep me under the earnings ‘cap’ for folks like me.  With my teenager having handily outgrown all his clothes over the summer…I swear the boy is taller than me, so probably 6′ now… I am going to need all the money I can save up to get him clothes and shoes for back to school.

Good news front…for reasons I cannot explain but am delighted with…there is NO flea problem this summer.  Now the dogs are always on their flea/heartworm medications through the vet….but most summers the fleas are still ‘there’… there are always the random ones carried through the yard by a squirrel, coon, or local critter…   The last two months? Nothing!  I am thrilled.  The dogs are the most content and itch free I have seen them in years.  This is wonderful.

And so… off I go to write.  Edits on crit partner’s book are done and now it is time to get Khyr wrapped up.

Isn’t life wonderful?!

Whacking….weeds and words

It was a good day at work.  Whacked weeds, edged flowerbeds.  Lots of outdoor work to burn off energy and frustration.  Potted a couple of baby crepe myrtles I hope will do well and grow into nice new trees.  Purple.  I think purple crepe myrtles are sooo pretty.

Then at home I whacked more azaleas…so many more to trim.  And now I am whacking words in my edits.

It has been a good day.
