Crafty Wednesday

So I have really been getting into the finishing of this rocking chair for the Squid.  Stripping is a ‘pita’….dear dog how can something so LITTLE take soooo long?!!!  I have some small jars (samplers…perfect size) of accent colors…and paint squares that I have taped to the chair to decide on the colors for the actual parts. Those colors will be finalized after I find the right fabric for the seat cushion.

I want a bright cheerful ocean print.  Preferably with a squid in it…but if not…no biggie! I will create and applique a squid over top of the background fabric.  The final paint colors will be taken from the fabric.  So far i have red, yellow, orange, purple, green, and turquoise.  Excited to get started painting.

While I am looking for the fabric so I can begin painting, I have other crafts under way. Another polyclay toad house and a candle holder (pillar size).  Looking forward to getting back to actual pottery.  I really miss that and just read a fine book on setting up the home pottery shed that makes it seem, somehow, so much more accessible. Hope returns.  😀

Freezer Friday

Okay…not literally.  This is still the Lowcountry, after all.  Still, after three glorious days of bright sunshine and 80s, to drop into cold rain and 40 was depressingly ‘wintery’.  Tomorrow we shall rebound to 60 and it is all better from there.  Before long this long winter shall finally be a memory and we can all bask in the glory of summer.

Cait came by today and we made Red Shrimp Curry for supper…while the teens ordered pizza.  Too bad for them, we got all the good stuff 😀  Since Cait surprised me with that meal, the supper I had planned gets pushed back to tomorrow.  Mushroom and pepper alfredo… which may not be exactly traditional…but I love the flavor the cashew milk adds to the garlic and spices.

I have the hankering to bake.  Something I loved to do and gave up when Reesie was diagnosed with celiacs because I couldn’t find a way to make anything come out ‘right’ with what was available back then and I refused to make something we  all couldn’t enjoy.   Now there are a lot more options and it is possible to make at least some of my favorites in a GF/vegan friendly version…  I really want to give it a go.  Maybe next week when the groceries for this month are gathered I can get the ingredients to enjoy playing with some old favorites once more.

Spent some time yesterday working out the final (okay …right this moment final but could still be changed on a whim when I commence, LOL) patterns for the little rocking chair.  Some of them I like so much I may very well turn them eventually into clay ‘stamps’ for future use on pieces of pottery.  A rather random and ecelectic mix that speaks to my own whimsy and our heritage… a bit of Gullah, a bit of Celtic, some Native American inspired, and a squid….because…well… SQUID.

Now to this week’s FANTASY inspiration for Fantasy Friday… I have reached a turning point in the story, and looking out over a scene rather like this and deciding which way to follow.  Where would you go?

Welcome 2015

A new year…and to kick off the event, a new blog.  I still love my old blog over on Live Journal, but that one is filled with kiddie stories, the eccentricities of my rather boring everyday life, and the random gibberish that is ‘me’.  That being so, the powers that be (aka my Reesie, and my bestest buddies, and I) decided it was due time for a blog a bit more ‘centered’ and to that end, here it comes.

Be prepared for much tweaking as I struggle to make this place my own.  Also for random stories and musings about my beloved beach, gardening, landscaping, crafts, projects, pets and critters, and of course lots of discussion of my ‘writing life’. Also fantasy themes.  It can’t be avoided; I live and breathe my fantasies.

As of the beginning of this wonderful new year I am happily buried in the edits of my novel.  It is in its second round of edits… being read and slashed by the aformentioned crit partners.  Next up…deep breath…beta readers.  This is going to be one adventure filled twelve months and I am excited to begin.

This weekend I have to finish stripping the paint from my current ‘project’… a child’s rocking chair…it should already be completed but was waylaid by the holidays. Strip the last layer of paint this weekend, fill the gouges in the wood, sand it one last time and next week the painting will be completed. Thus far I have chosen the coral and turquoise for the little chair.      I shall have to go back and settle on the remaining colors.

I hope to add green, yellow, and purple yet.  A bright palette that will sing with the addition of simple free hand design patterns in contrasting colors… it will be as much fun to see as it is to create.

Started pouring over the seed and nursery catalogs today.  Tomorrow?  Some of the goodies I am considering for the gardens.  Here in the Lowcountry, spring gardening is fast upon us!

And after that…finding the perfect picture for Friday’s Fantasy post.  Cause you know a fantasy writer needs lots of lovely fantasy inspirations to play with.

As we go along, I hope to get to know all you lovely people out there.  If there is something you are interested in, gimme a holler.  It is going to be another amazing year.  Embrace the magic… and Dream.
